Welcome from the dean of St Mellitus College

In 2007-8, the North Thames Ministerial Training Course became a central part of the new St Mellitus College. St Mellitus was sent by Pope Gregory the Great from his Roman home to the wilds of Britain at the start of the 7th century. He was part of a group of missionaries who played a vital role in establishing and teaching the Christian faith in the south east of England, laying the foundations for the church for centuries to come.

St Mellitus College (SMC) is an initiative of the Bishops of London and Chelmsford, and aims to capture some of the same creative missionary heart and spirit of this pioneer of the faith. The task of Christian mission and ministry in the 21st century faces challenges of its own, quite different from those of those early fragile years of the growth of the church in England. Yet this is also a time of great opportunity as the church learns to bear witness in, and serve effectively a fast-changing culture. SMC aims to prepare the people God has called to Christian life and mission for whatever that ministry involves, close to the heart of one of the world’s great global cities.

NTMTC plays a vital role at the heart of St Mellitus alongside the other main constituent body, St Paul’s Theological Centre in west London. If you are exploring a vocation to Christian ministry, or if this vocation has already been recognised and you are looking at training options, I hope this website will help you understand how the NTMTC course works, and discern whether this would be a good place for you to study. If you simply want to deepen your theological knowledge and are considering joining us as an independent student, I trust that you will find the material here helpful. If you would like to explore things further, please do get in touch with us – I look forward to meeting you.

With best wishes,

The Revd Dr Graham Tomlin
